Project Overview

This project is co-producted by Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong Ballet and Studio Wayne McGregor, London. It is co-commissioned by La Biennale di Venezia, Danza; Somerset House, London; Tai Kwun – Centre for Heritage and Arts, Hong Kong; and presented in partnership with Somerset House, London.

This pioneering cultural performance leverages the immersive nVis installation developed by Professor Jeffrey Shaw, Chair Professor of the Academy of Visual Arts and Director of the Visualization Research Centre at HKBU, which is funded by the HKSAR Government’s Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC) under the HK$35.4 million “Future Cinema Systems: Next-Generation Art Technologies” project. On The Other Earth, the world's first post-cinematic choreographic installation, refracts, evolves and reimagines dance performance in a startlingly original new form of experience set within Professor Jeffrey Shaw and Visiting Professor of the Department of Computer Science at HKBU Professor Sarah Kenderdine's radically immersive panoramic, 360-degree stereoscopic, 12K LED, 26-million-pixel nVis screen, where 3D imagery is experienced within an enveloping, large-scale cylindrical architecture. Combining dance – connecting in close contact with the hyperreal dancers of Company Wayne McGregor and the Hong Kong Ballet, choreography, digital imaging, spatialised sound, and artificial intelligence, Professor Sir Wayne McGregor transports the audiences in a thought-provoking, otherworldly encounter.

This work transforms how we think about movement, the body and performance. Drawing on decades of multi award-winning choreographer Wayne McGregor’s experiments with AI, digital technology, and physical intelligence – explored throughout the landmark exhibition Infinite Bodies at Somerset House – this installation brings these ideas together. Through an unforgettable virtual experience, it offers a unique way to engage with movement and human expression, even for those who may not usually be drawn to dance.

A 57 minute, virtual choreographic installation experienced within a 360° 3D screen

Dancers from Company Wayne McGregor and the Hong Kong Ballet appear almost within arm’s reach as their bodies move around you, accompanied by a deeply atmospheric spatial soundscape created by Invisible Mountain. Designed for small groups of up to 20 people, On The Other Earth is an intimate, otherworldly experience that blurs the line between audience and performance, and hints at the future of how we might watch dance, cinema and live art.

On The Other Earth breaks the fourth wall as visitors are invited into the heart of the dance, connecting in close contact with the hyperreal dancers of Company Wayne McGregor and the Hong Kong Ballet in a physicalised sound environment designed by Invisible Mountain. Never encountered in the same way twice, groups of up to 20 people will experience On The Other Earth’s visual and sonic landscapes unfolding before them in a series of thought-provoking otherworldly encounters and intimate interplay, upending our perceptions of performance and the future of entertainment.

《On The Other Earth》由編舞家 Wayne McGregor 與藝術家 Ravi Deepres、Theresa Baumgartner、Jeffrey Shaw 共同創作。

《On The Other Earth》為最多 20 人的小型群體而設計,是一種親密而異界般的體驗,模糊了觀眾與表演的界線,也暗示未來我們觀看舞蹈、電影與現場藝術的方式。

《On The Other Earth》打破「第四面牆」,邀請訪客走入舞蹈的核心,在由 Invisible Mountain 設計的「物理化」聲音環境中,與 Wayne McGregor 舞團與香港芭蕾舞團的超寫實舞者近距離連結。
