Project Overview
Step into the captivating world of Dreamscape of the Qianlong Emperor, a multimedia installation that immerses visitors in a poetic journey centred on the Emperor's memories of his wife. This artwork intricately revolves around one of his most poignant poem composed by the Qianlong Emperor for his long-deceased wife Lady Fuca, encapsulating his emotions and memories.

At the heart of this exhibit is a distinctive gallery designed around a circular couch inspired by Qing dynasty aesthetics, accommodating twelve individuals. Reclining on the couch, visitors gaze upward at a captivating circular video projection, measuring five meters in diameter, displayed on the ceiling. This projection represents the Emperor's dream, evoking cherished memories of his beloved late wife, surrounded by the calligraphy of the poem he wrote in her memory. The artwork fundamentally embodies the deep sorrow the Emperor experienced, as expressed through his words.

Technical Narrative
The original poem, penned by the emperor himself, has been re-inscribed by Wang Dongling for this installation, bringing this impressive artwork to life. The poem is not only visually presented but also narrated in both Cantonese and Putonghua.

Visual elements in the video projection are drawn from existing artifacts and paintings in the Palace Museum. The imagery includes symbols such as dragons, phoenixes, butterflies, and other emblematic motifs deeply intertwined with inherited metaphors and sentiment.

Through these visuals, the installation vividly conveys the intricate cultural and historical richness of Qing court life, offering insights into its ontologies, history, and cultural subtleties. A key aspect of this work is that visitors are not merely observing; they are physically engaged and experience an embodied connection. By lying on the sofa, one enters a space of dreams, akin to sharing a dream with the emperor.
