Section 1: Project Overview
The handscroll Pacifying the South China Sea portrays the Jiaqing Emperor's (1796–1820) actions to suppress piracy. An ultra-high-resolution digital copy of this handscroll has been incorporated into the visualization system to explore its narrative potential in a cultural heritage demonstration.
Visitors can collaboratively examine the historical painting using virtual magnifying glasses controlled by handheld devices with interactive tracking. As viewers combine their virtual magnifying glasses, the size and magnification of the image increase, revealing more detailed aspects of the painting.
Section 2: Technical Narrative
This feature highlights the system's capacity to foster social interaction, encouraging collaboration as viewers work together to closely explore the narrative elements of the Pirate Scroll. Gesture recognition enhances this engagement further, allowing users to point and direct their virtual magnifying glasses to specific areas of interest in the immersive environment. The system's streaming capability also supports real-time access to the Future Cinema System at partner institutions.
Additionally, the project can be experienced on domestic VR devices, enabling users at home to connect and participate.
