Jeffrey SHAW 

Jeffrey Shaw has been a leading figure in new media art since its emergence from the performance, expanded cinema and installation paradigms of the 1960’s to its present-day technology-informed and virtualized forms. In a prolific career of widely exhibited and critically acclaimed work he has pioneered the creative use of digital media technologies in the fields of expanded cinema, virtual and augmented reality, immersive visualization environments, navigable cinematic systems and interactive narrative. 

Shaw’s artworks, milestones of technological and cultural innovation, have had a seminal impact on the theory, design and application of digital media in art, society and industry, and his achievements are amongst the most cited in new media literature. “(Shaw’s) works co-created, co-constructed the genre, gave it its initial contours.” (Peter Weibel). His numerous awards include the Prix Ars Electronica Golden Nica for Visionary Pioneer of Media Art and the ACM Siggraph Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement in Digital Art. Besides his artistic research, Shaw has been active in conceiving, curating and producing major international exhibitions, publications and conferences.

Shaw past positions include founding director of the ZKM Institute for Visual Media Karlsruhe, co-founder and director of  the UNSW iCinema Centre for Interactive Cinema Research, founding director of the Applied Center for Interactive Visualization and Embodiment at the Hong Kong Science Park, and Dean of the CityU Hong Kong School of Creative Media. Besides his current engagement as Chair Professor at the Hong Kong Baptist University Academy of Visual Arts, Shaw is Visiting Professor at CAFA Beijing, Honorary Professor at the Hong Kong Metropolitan University, and Artistic Director of the Hong Kong Tourist Commission’s City in Time project at the City University of Hong Kong.
