Flying Mythological Horses

2022 | Hong Kong Palace Museum, Hong Kong

Physical objects and paintings of mythological flying horses from the Palace Museum collection is virtually brought to life as real-time animations that pass across projection screens above the museum visitors’ heads.

Virtual cameras observe these horses as they pass by four screens hanging at different heights in the gallery space, and thereby they become visible as projections on both sides of these screens. The movement of these creatures is computed in real-time according to a ‘flocking’ algorithm so that the behaviour of these flying horses is always different and never repeating.
